Myanmar govt urges rebels to surrender, amnesty and rewards offered

Myanmar’s authorities have proposed that rebels, including the People’s Defence Forces (PDF), an armed wing of the former Myanmar government, lay down arms and return to peaceful life.

Myanmar state newspaper Global New Light of Myanmar reported this yesterday, according to Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

“The State Administration Council is extending an invitation to those involved in various armed groups, including the PDF, to return to the legal fold.

“Those who do so are being provided with necessary assistance and support.

“Moreover, individuals who returned to the legal fold with arms and ammunition are being offered cash rewards,” the government said in the statement.

The authorities claimed that violent acts committed by rebels, as well as the power struggle between rebel commanders, had left many fighters disillusioned.

The government called on those disillusioned with the armed struggle or coerced by commanders into committing “terror acts” against civilians to contact the nearest administration office, military office, or police station for assistance.

They are urged to bring as many weapons and ammunition as possible with them.

The civil conflict in Myanmar erupted after the military seized power in a coup in 2021, following a decade of civilian rule. Besides the armed political opposition, a number of ethnic armed forces joined the fight.
