Summary

  • Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman receives only RM200,000 in government funding after nearly two years of negotiations, with alleged stringent conditions.

  • Syed Saddiq claims that the fund is limited to his office expenses only. No public welfare, infrastructure improvements, or community contributions are allowed.

Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said that he has been given a limited government funding of RM200,000 for Muar, claiming that this came with tight conditions.

On his Instagram page, the Muar MP said that after nearly two years of fighting for parliamentary allocation for his constituency, he was only given a nominal sum, which is subject to a thorough audit.

He claimed that the fund cannot be used for public welfare assistance, infrastructure improvements, or any other contributions.

“Only for paying office rent/staff salaries/office equipment/office management. Will be fully audited (I agree 100 percent).

“Government MPs: RM20 million… Muar? RM200,000,” Syed Saddiq wrote.

He said that he will continue to toil for his constituency and innovate ways to raise funds.

“In the past six months alone, through various ‘new’ efforts, I have successfully contributed over RM2 million for Muar’s welfare through my own initiatives. God willing. I will continue to do this.

“When one door closes, 10 more open,” he added.

200km fund run

In February, Syed Saddiq criticised the government for withholding constituency allocations from opposition and independent MPs, despite holding five negotiations with Deputy Prime Minister II Fadillah Yusof.

To secure funds for Muar, he resorted to alternative means, including running 200km in protest and even modelling, eventually raising over RM1 million for his constituents.

He urged the government to be transparent, stop political bias in aid distribution, and prioritise the welfare of the people regardless of political affiliation.

During a parliamentary session last November, Fadillah stated that he remained open to discussions with opposition MPs regarding constituency allocations.

He also noted that Syed Saddiq was the only MP who had submitted a response to the memorandum of understanding and assured that he would respond in due course.

His remarks followed a report last September, in which Perikatan Nasional leaders rejected Putrajaya’s draft agreement on constituency allocations for opposition MPs.

In March this year, Fadillah said that the constituency allocation issue for Syed Saddiq would be resolved soon, Bernama reported.

Fadillah, who heads the Government Consultative Council Committee, reportedly said that Syed Saddiq had agreed in principle to the conditions set by the government.
