PAS ulamas say moral, religious duty of all to join 'Turun Anwar' rally

PAS’ ulama wing is playing the religion card in appealing for a mass turnout to this Saturday’s protest in Kuala Lumpur, which calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Interestingly, the Islamist party’s clarion call seeks to appeal to all faiths and not just Muslims.

“The PAS ulama wing calls on all Malaysians who care about the country’s future to join the Turun Anwar peaceful rally this Saturday.

“We stress that it is the moral and religious duty of all citizens to voice the truth against cruel rulers,” said PAS ulama chief Ahmad Yahaya in a statement today.

“This is the moment we make our stand, for the country’s dignity and the sake of future generations,” he also said.

The protest scheduled for 2pm in downtown Kuala Lumpur on Saturday is the apex of a series of smaller demonstrations PAS and Perikatan Nasional have been organising, calling for Anwar’s resignation.

Ahmad, who is also the Pokok Sena MP, said Anwar must step down for failing to deliver on promises, stimulate the economy, and stabilise the country’s administration.

He likened the country to a bus being driven recklessly, endangering its passengers - the rakyat.

Anwar, who rejected the criticisms levelled against him, has assured that the police would not obstruct Saturday’s rally.

However, he has said that if PN wants him to step down, they should do so in Parliament via a vote of confidence.
