With the opposition hitting the streets tomorrow to call for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s resignation, a Pakatan Harapan leader urged the former to name their prime ministerial candidate.

“One question to Perikatan Nasional Youth leadership, who is your prime ministerial candidate?

“Is the one who forced the people to wave the white flag? Or is it the former special envoy to the Middle East?

“Or is it the opposition leader who doesn’t dare to face the prime minister during the Dewan Rakyat session?” asked Harapan Youth chief Woo Kah Leong in a statement today.

The Perak state executive councillor was referring to the “White Flag” movement during the premiership of Muhyiddin Yassin, where people seeking essential items resorted to waving white flags outside their homes, allowing others to help them.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang served as special envoy to the Middle East during Muhyiddin’s administration.

Yesterday, opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin claimed that the rally tomorrow could attract up to a million participants.

Hence, he suggested that Anwar consider stepping down before the public takes to the streets.

“I want to tell the prime minister, let the rakyat speak their mind. If they want to ask you to step down and you feel the need to, then resign.

“If you resign before the rally, even better. No need to make it hard for the people,” the Larut MP added.

PN being insincere

Woo said the opposition was being disingenuous by saying they were not seeking a change in government but only Anwar’s resignation.

Under the parliamentary democracy system, Woo pointed out that the entire cabinet must resign when the prime minister leaves office.

“Hence, their claims that they have no interest in changing the government are incorrect.

“As such, I don’t feel it is wrong for us to call the PN Youth leadership the most imbecilic in our nation’s history.

“Perhaps, this is why several NGOs have rejected PN’s invitation to join the rally and stressed the need for political stability,” Woo said.

‘No to Sheraton Move 2.0’

Earlier today, several NGOs issued a joint statement that they have no interest in backing attempts to form a “backdoor government” like what happened in 2020, saying the move created political instability.

“We reject any attempts to form a ‘backdoor government’ in the middle of a parliamentary term, like what happened after the Sheraton Move, which created political instability at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Besides, it’s not clear whether the next government would give full commitment to implementing institutional reforms, or the administration could be too fragile to enact any meaningful changes.

“What we want now is to see institutional reforms being implemented to ensure a level playing field for all parties as we gear up for the 16th general election,” the NGOs added.

The signatories of the statement were Bersih, C4 Center, Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas), Projek Sama, Pusat Komas, and Transparency International Malaysia.
