Cops say around 18k people turned up for 'Turun Anwar' rally

The Kuala Lumpur police estimated that around 18,000 people participated in the “Turun Anwar” rally at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, earlier today.

Kuala Lumpur acting police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said no police reports have been lodged so far, and the gathering was held without incident.

“I would like to thank everyone for not engaging in any provocation. Though there were some disagreements at the beginning, everything was resolved later,” he said during a press conference today.

Earlier, PAS leaders Ahmad Fadhli Shaari and Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said that the turnout was at 500,000. Malaysiakini estimated the number to be around 25,000.

Last week, the police estimated the turnout to be between 10,000 and 15,000.

Studying leaders’ speeches

The police will be scrutinising the speeches that the opposition leaders made earlier to ensure they did not touch on race, religion and royalty (3R).

“We will study the speeches if there are 3R elements… anything provocative, we will take action.

“As I said earlier, the right to assemble is there. Just that when someone breaches the law, then action will be taken,” he added.

Usuf said 3,000 police officers were deployed to manage the rally.

“We increased the number to 3,000 to ensure everything went on smoothly.

“And we will conduct a post-mortem later to see if there is a need for improvements from all quarters,” he added.
