Deputy speaker cuts short MP's question on 'monkey' caricature

PARLIAMENT | Sany Hamzan (Harapan-Hulu Langat)’s supplementary question in the Dewan Rakyat was cut short today after he launched into a tirade against Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas).

He was cut off by Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Ramli Mohd Nor after citing a Facebook post by Fadhli that featured Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as well as his Cambodian and Thai counterparts, as animal caricatures.

The now-deleted post was uploaded following a joint press conference by the three leaders, after Anwar mediated a meeting that resulted in an agreement for an immediate ceasefire between the rival parties.

Posing his question to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil during the Minister’s Question Time session, Sany (above, left) also brought up Saturday’s PAS-led “Turun Anwar” rally.

He cited a closing prayer read by Zulkifli Ismail (PN-Jasin), which he claimed contained curses against Anwar’s administration.

“I want to ask the minister - shouldn’t our prayers be for happiness, well-being, and protection of the country… not curses?

“This is a problem with PN’s leadership. And my question - yesterday I was flooded with a caricature insulting the prime minister, equating him to an ape, monkey, or baboon.

“This is a rude, uncivilised, and disgraceful act by the MP for Pasir Mas,” Sany said.

At this point, Ramli (above, right) interjected, reminding Sany to stick to the rules for posing questions and not turn the session into a debate.

“I gave you space and reminded you - a question can come with a preamble, but not be turned into a debate.

“I interpret this as a debate, and therefore, I’m ending the opportunity for the right side to ask questions. We now move on to the third question,” said Ramli.
