PKR Youth leader condemns unapologetic Fadhli as 'nation traitor'

PAS MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari is facing heightened criticism after refusing to apologise for a social media post perceived to be mocking Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s role in brokering peace between Thailand and Cambodia.

Taking to X today, PKR Youth deputy chief Nabil Halimi labelled the Pasir Mas lawmaker as a “nation traitor”, who must be investigated by the police.

Online portal Free Malaysia Today yesterday quoted Fadhli as saying he would leave the matter to the police, following reports lodged against his now-deleted Facebook post that featured Anwar, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai as animal caricatures.

“I am deeply disappointed by the arrogance and pride of PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, who refuses to apologise for his actions in insulting Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, alongside the two leaders of Thailand and Cambodia, by depicting them as animals.

“Fadhli’s attitude clearly demonstrates that he is a traitor to the nation who should be immediately investigated by the Royal Malaysia Police.

“He should realise that his actions not only insult the Malaysian prime minister, but also dishonour Malaysia and the civil servants at Wisma Putra who have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the mission to mediate the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand,” Nabil added.

He also reminded Fadhli that Anwar’s efforts in serving as a facilitator for the peace negotiations also represent Malaysia in its capacity as this year’s Asean chair.

He added that any act that insults Malaysia’s efforts is a clear “form of treachery designed to embarrass Malaysia in the eyes of the world.”

“I would like to thank several opposition leaders, such as Wan Ahmad Fayhsal, who have also provided support and praise for Anwar’s efforts, despite differing views on administrative and economic management issues,” he said, referring to Perikatan Nasional’s Machang MP.

In a separate statement, Bandar Tun Razak PKR Youth information chief, Muhammad Faiz Danial labelled Fadhli’s action as “disgraceful”.

“However, while the world praises Malaysia’s role as a peacemaker, Fadhli has emerged with an insulting, mocking, and belittling tone - an action that not only brings shame to the nation, but also dishonours Islamic values.

“Does brother Fadhli prefer to see continued bloodshed rather than support the path of peace? What kind of politics does he advocate when human lives become material for mockery?” Faiz asked.

Fadhli came under fire after posting a cartoon depicting a goat and a sheep fighting over a banana, with a monkey acting as the judge.

The accompanying caption read: “A monkey need not preside over the case involving a goat and sheep fighting over a banana”, while attaching a news article on the Thailand-Cambodia conflict on the side.

Demand for formal apology

Faiz demanded that Fadhli publicly retract his remark and issue a formal apology to the people of Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia.

He also called for commitment from all political leaders to respect peace efforts and Islamic teachings in resolving conflicts.

“Malaysia will continue to be a voice for diplomacy and humanity. We will not remain silent towards any party that tarnishes peace efforts for cheap political gain,” he added.

On Monday, Anwar successfully mediated an unconditional ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, effective midnight, following peace talks hosted in Putrajaya.
