AGC issues key instructions to cops on probe into Zara's death

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has given several key instructions to the authorities to assist them in completing their investigation into 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir’s death.

Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar confirmed they were given to the authorities yesterday.

“These instructions were our suggestions to the police on how to complete their investigation.

“However, I cannot reveal any of it. Any details can only be disclosed after the police complete their investigation paper (IP) and are referred to us,” he told reporters when met at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya today.

On Aug 4, the AGC said it was examining a comprehensive preliminary investigation report from the police on the student’s death, including studying legal elements of the police probe.

Zara, who was a Form One student at SMK Agama Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar, was found with severe injuries at her school dormitory at around 3am on July 16.

Initial reports stated she had fallen from the third floor of the building. She died the following day at the hospital.

Earlier, Dusuki spoke at an appreciation event for the new Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.

In his speech, the AG praised Wan Ahmad Farid’s infamous 2022 move, where the judge recused himself from hearing former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s SRC International corruption case.

“This marks a significant moment in affirming the independence of the judiciary in our country.

“We will not soon forget Your Lordship’s powerful and principled words, and I quote: the public perception of the independence of the judiciary should not be put in doubt,” he said.

Dusuki added that the relationship between the judiciary and the AGC is one of mutual respect and shared responsibility despite serving in different capacities in the legislative branch.

He affirmed AGC’s commitment to preserve, protect and defend the legal system.

“This dedication is demonstrated through commitments including law reform initiatives that streamline litigation and promote fairness,” he said.
