Thailand, Cambodia commend M'sia's mediation in border dispute

Thailand and Cambodia have once again expressed their appreciation to the Malaysian government for playing an active mediating role in resolving the recent border tensions between the two neighbouring countries.

Thailand’s acting Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit said Malaysia’s efforts in facilitating coordination had helped both parties to resolve the matter themselves, with support from Asean.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Malaysian government as the Asean chair, and the Defence Ministry for coordinating and facilitating this meeting successfully.

“This morning, I also paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, accompanied by Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister (Tea Seiha). The discussion was held in good spirits,” he said.

He made the remarks during a press conference after co-chairing the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting with Tea Seiha at Wisma Perwira in Kuala Lumpur today.

Also present at the meeting as observers were Malaysia’s Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari and Chief of Defence Force Nizam Jaffar, as well as United States Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D Kagan and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing.

Nattaphon also noted that during the meeting, Anwar expressed his pleasure at the positive progress made in the GBC talks, calling it an important step towards stabilising the ceasefire.

Tea stated his side will continue to work with Malaysia and Thailand in good faith and cooperation to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

“Cambodia appreciates Malaysia’s role and is committed to settling the dispute by peaceful means, in accordance with international law and the Asean Charter,” the general said.

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been simmering since May 28, following a skirmish between troops near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier.
