More MPs in solidarity with Rafizi after attack on son

PKR backbenchers in Parliament today condemned the attack on Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli’s son, describing it as a “cowardly act” that threatens public safety.

PKR’s parliament whip, Port Dickson MP Aminuddin Harun, said yesterday’s incident at a shopping mall in Putrajaya was clearly intended to intimidate and warn a vocal lawmaker fighting for the truth.

“This attack is not only an attempt to instil fear, but also a form of violence that exceeds the bounds of humanity,” he stressed.

In a press conference in Parliament, Aminuddin led PKR MPs to express sympathy and solidarity with Rafizi and his family, stressing that in a democracy, differences of opinion should not be resolved through threats or violence, especially on children.

They also backed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s stand that the law must be enforced without compromise.

“No one should escape firm action if proven to be involved,” he said.

Thorough, swift probe

The backbenchers further supported Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail’s call for a thorough, swift, and transparent investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

They urged the police to use all assets and expertise to hunt down the attackers and those behind the incident.

“The safety of people’s leaders and citizens must always be guaranteed - this is not merely a personal issue, but one that involves public safety and the continuity of democracy,” they added.

The group concluded with a pledge to stand firmly with Rafizi, vowing that threats would not weaken their resolve to continue fighting for truth, justice, and reform.

Yesterday, Rafizi’s 12-year-old son was dragged out of his car by two assailants and stabbed with a syringe as the MP, his wife, and the boy were entering the vehicle.

Rafizi said the attack was carried out by two individuals dressed in black and wearing full-face helmets.

‘Cowardly, cruel, unacceptable’

DAP whip Khoo Poay Tiong also voiced his support for Rafizi and his family, urging the authorities to take immediate action.

Khoo described the attack as “cowardly, cruel, and unacceptable in any civilised society.”

“We demand that the police expedite the investigation process, identify the suspects as soon as possible, regularly update the public on the developments, and implement preventive measures to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.

“No one, including politicians and their families, should be a target of threats or physical attacks because of their political stance,” he said.

Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin also expressed support and solidarity for Rafizi and his family.

Hamzah, in a press conference, reiterated Perikatan Nasional’s strong condemnation of all forms of violence against the former economy minister’s son and will continue to fight for justice.

“We, as members of the opposition, stand together on this issue to ensure that Rafizi and his family remain safe, and for incidents like these not to happen again.

“The fight for justice continues. This is our solidarity on this issue. Justice. It does not matter if he (Rafizi) did not like us before, but this is not an issue of liking or disliking (each other), it is an issue of justice,” he said, adding to calls for stern action.

End political violence

Separately, MCA vice-president Wee Jeck Seng said such incidents never occurred when BN was in power.

"This marks a dark and alarming development - one that fuels not only anger but profound unease," he said in a statement today.

He urged all political parties to return to a political culture that prioritises rational discourse.

He also called for an end to political violence, saying that such incidents tarnish the national image, undermine investor confidence, and erode the country's safety and harmony.

"Let us stand united in defending Malaysia’s political environment and protecting our democracy from being derailed by violence," he said.
