Rafizi's family under police protection after mall attack

Police have confirmed that Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli's family will be under police protection following an attack on his son in broad daylight at a shopping centre in Putrajaya yesterday.

During a press conference today, Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar was questioned whether Rafizi's family would receive enhanced protection following the incident.

"There is (protection), but I cannot disclose (specifics), though it's under police supervision.

"A comprehensive investigation involving various aspects is being conducted by the Selangor police contingent with assistance from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department," he replied.

He said the investigation has not yet identified the substance injected into the 12-year-old child’s left hand, however, the victim is in stable condition under hospital observation.

No suspect yet

The police have yet to receive an official report on the threatening messages sent to Rafizi's wife, he added.

"So far, we have not received a report, and we have requested that an official report be made.

"The suspect has not yet been identified and further investigations are being actively conducted," he said.

Earlier today, Rafizi revealed that his wife had received threatening messages after the attack on their son, including one that appeared to threaten the boy with AIDS.

Shazeli said that the investigation is covering various angles, including identifying a motive for the incident and the objects that the suspect used.

"Thankfully, there are many CCTV cameras at the scene of the incident, which aided our investigation," he added.

So far, six individuals have given their statements to police, including the child, Rafizi, and his wife.

The case is being investigated under Section 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, as well as Sections 324 and 352 of the Penal Code.

Attempt to silence

Yesterday, Rafizi described the attack on his son as an attempt to silence him from speaking out on certain issues.

According to the former PKR deputy president, his son was attacked by an unidentified man at about 1.45pm when leaving a shopping centre in Putrajaya, adding that he dragged the boy and gave him an injection.

Rafizi also said that the attack could be linked to his recent meeting with a “group of whistleblowers” with information on a scandal that implicated a “certain individual”.

He did not name the implicated individual, but in recent weeks, he had called on the MACC to open an investigation paper against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s former aide, Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, a rising politician-turned-entrepreneur, whose name was allegedly linked to a coal mining scandal.
