Why invite 'bloodied hands' Trump to Asean, Hassan asks
Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat, Hassan Karim (Harapan-Pasir Gudang) raised his concern over the US president’s role in the ongoing genocide by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza.
PARLIAMENT | A government MP today questioned Malaysia’s decision to invite US President Donald Trump to the 47th Asean Summit, scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur this October.
Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat, Hassan Karim (Harapan-Pasir Gudang) raised his concern over the US president’s role in the ongoing genocide by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza.
“Is it appropriate for Malaysia, as the chair of Asean, to invite Trump to the Asean Summit, when we know that (his) hands are covered in the blood of innocent Gaza people killed in the genocide?
“Are we going to roll out the red carpet for Trump?” he asked.
Hassan’s question was directed at Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, who was delivering his 13th Malaysia Plan winding-up speech.
In response, Mohamad (BN-Rembau) defended the invitation to Trump, saying that it was sent out by Malaysia in its capacity as the Asean chair and that the issues should not be mixed.
The minister also pointed out that it would be a good opportunity for Malaysia and Asean to have Trump at the summit, where they can tell him the region’s stand on the Palestine issue.
“I think it would also be good if we can meet (Trump) face to face. Then all Asean countries can tell him themselves, like what we did when the US state secretary attended the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers meeting.
“So do not mix the issues. There (during the summit), we can bring the Asean position to stress that we unanimously... We have managed to get a joint statement from Asean to say that Asean regrets the brutality committed against Palestinians.
“We will bring this, so do not mix (the issues), because we should maintain the bilateral relationship. We are also confident that America, too, especially Trump, wants to see Israel’s atrocity put to a stop,” he said.
