Form 3 student falls from school building, cops launch probe

Police have launched an investigation into a case involving a Form Three student who fell from the third storey of a boarding school in Sabak Bernam, Selangor.

The teenage boy has been hospitalised in critical condition following the 2am incident with injuries to his brain, lungs and jaw, Sinar Harian reported.

“After receiving a report, the police launched an investigation under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.

“The investigation will cover various angles, including students’ safety, hostel management and the student’s background - including his friends (at the school),” Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar said in a statement today.

It was too early to determine whether the teenager was bullied, he said, adding that the police are in the midst of recording statements from witnesses.

According to Sinar Harian, the boy’s relative lodged a police report at the Sabak Bernam police station at 5am.

The relative also admonished the school’s management, alleging that his family was only notified of the incident hours later.

“We were only informed of the incident at 4am, when the incident happened at about 2am,” the relative said.

School officials transferred

Following the incident, the Education Ministry transferred the school’s principal, student affairs senior assistant and the warden to the state Education Department to facilitate investigations into the matter.

Its minister Fadhlina Sidek said that it has also initiated an internal probe into the matter to check whether the school had complied with standard operating procedure.

“I pray that he gets better soon and hope the family stays strong in these challenging times,” she said in a statement today.

Last month, Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir died a day after being found unconscious in a drain near her religious school’s dormitory in Papar, Sabah, at approximately 4am.

Her family believes bullying may have played a role in her death. An inquest into her death is set to begin on Sept 3.
