The family of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin has welcomed the federal police’s swift action in taking over the probe into his death, following the Shah Alam High Court’s order yesterday.

The family’s lawyer, Naran Singh, told Malaysiakini that Syamsul’s mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, was “very happy” with the news and thanked the authorities for acting quickly.

“We have said in our application that the previous investigating officer could not be the one investigating and conducting the second post-mortem, more so after he had submitted a signed affidavit in objecting to our application.

“Following today’s news, we welcome this quick action. We’re very happy that Bukit Aman is taking over this case, especially after the previous investigating officer had done such a shoddy job,” Naran said.

Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that Bukit Aman had taken over the investigation into Syamsul’s death, after judicial commissioner Bhupindar Singh Gurchahan Singh Preet yesterday granted Ummu’s application to exhume her son’s remains for a second post-mortem.

Bhupindar directed the inspector-general of police (IGP) or his officers to oversee the exhumation, and the second post-mortem must be conducted within 14 days after the exhumation.

Additionally, the judicial commissioner also ordered that the post-mortem be conducted in Naran’s and forensic expert Dr Bhupinder Singh’s presence, for the attending forensic pathologist to deliver the autopsy report within a reasonable time, and for a copy of the report to be given to Naran.

Ummu filed an application for the second autopsy on Aug 14, naming IGP Khalid Ismail and Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar as respondents, after finding suspicious injury marks on Syamsul’s body.

She said, in her application, that she suspected criminal elements in her son’s death on July 28.
