Tan-Thinaah fall in finals, finish with silver at World Championships

National women’s doubles Pearly Tan and M Thinaah have concluded their World Championships campaign with a silver medal, falling at the final hurdle in Paris, France.

Tan and Thinaah were unable to add on to the earlier mixed doubles victory, losing to China’s dominant Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning 14-21, 22-20, 17-21.

The Malaysians saw a brief resurgence in the second set, but despite a late rally in the deciding match, the top-ranked Liu and Tan were not to be denied.

The result notwithstanding, this was Tan-Thinaah's best-ever achievement at the World Championships in four outings, with their previous best being a quarter-final appearance in the 2023 edition.

Earlier in the evening, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei achieved a historic win, bagging Malaysia's first-ever mixed doubles world title and the second World Championships crown, following Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik's victory in 2022.

The pair defeated China’s Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin 21-15, 21-14, earning praise from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who described their victory as a "National Day gift to Malaysia."
