Woman who rushed at Perak ruler charged

A woman who attempted to attack Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah during the recent state-level National Day celebration was charged in the Ipoh Magistrate’s Court today with using criminal force against him.

Bernama reported that Nurshazwani Afni Zorki, 41, nodded in understanding after the charge was read before Magistrate Harith Mazlan, but no plea was recorded.

According to the charge, Nurshazwani was accused, under Section 352 of the Penal Code, of using criminal force against Sultan Nazrin in front of the Ipoh Town Hall, Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab, on Aug 31 at 8.20am.

She faces up to three months’ imprisonment, or a fine of up to RM1,000, or both.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani requested that the charge be read without a plea as initial checks found the accused suffers from schizophrenia.

Nasrul also requested that the accused undergo examination and monitoring at Hospital Bahagia Tanjung Rambutan, Ulu Kinta, for one month under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

He said this was to confirm the accused’s schizophrenia diagnosis, assess her mental state at the time of the incident, and determine whether she is fit to enter a plea for trial.

The magistrate allowed the request.

The accused was represented by lawyer M Saravanan from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

During the Aug 31 incident, the woman managed to get on a stage where Sultan Nazrin stood while the national anthem was being played. She was successfully restrained by on-duty security personnel, arrested, and then taken to the police station.
