Maju Holdings director, ex-MEX II chief to face more corruption charges

Maju Holdings Sdn Bhd director Abu Sahid Mohamed and former MEX II Sdn Bhd director Yap Wee Leong are set to face more corruption charges soon related to the MEX II highway project.

Lead prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib said Abu Sahid will face seven further charges under Section 109 of the Penal Code involving RM145 million, while Yap will be slapped with 18 additional charges.

“Nine (of Yap’s expected charges) will be under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009 involving RM209 million, while the remaining nine, involving RM387 million, will be under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA),” Akram said in a statement today.

“These prosecutions will be conducted in the near future,” he added.

Earlier today, Abu Sahid, his wife Noor Azrina Azmi, and Yap pleaded not guilty to more than 30 charges of money laundering and criminal breach of trust involving millions of ringgit.

Abu Sahid was charged with four counts of criminal breach of trust involving RM313,124,617.02 under Section 409 of the Penal Code, as well as 13 counts of money laundering involving RM139,252,148.98 under the AMLATFPUAA 2001.

Azrina was charged under the same law with receiving illegal proceeds amounting to RM67,136,588.43 from her husband.

Yap was charged with 17 counts under Section 471 of the Penal Code for allegedly using false documents to file claims worth RM314,486,100 for the MEX II highway project’s progress.

Two Sessions Courts are handling their cases, with Abu Sahid claiming trial before judge Suzana Hussin, while Azrina and Yap did so before judge Rosli Ahmad.

Their lawyer, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, confirmed to Malaysiakini that they were released after posting bail, with Abu Sahid paying RM1.5 million, Azrina RM500,000 and Yap RM1 million.
