Putrajaya moves to secure Bintulu LNG facilities amid threat concerns

Putrajaya has directed all liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities operating in Bintulu, Sarawak, to immediately tighten security controls, following threats made against such facilities.

In a statement today, the National Security Council (NSC) confirmed it had received notification of security threats against LNG facilities in the nation, particularly in Bintulu.

It assured, however, that national security agencies remain prepared to face any eventualities and have taken control measures against the security threat.

"The government, through the NSC, has directed all LNG facilities operating in the Bintulu area to immediately tighten security controls temporarily.

"This is to allow the security authorities and the relevant parties to carry out an immediate investigation into the threat," added the council under the Prime Minister's Department.

It also urged the public against speculating on the matter, noting that updates on the situation will be provided from time to time.

When contacted by Malaysiakini, Bintulu MP Tiong King Sing said police have been informed of the threat and will be taking the necessary measures.

The tourism, arts and culture minister also noted that police will be deploying personnel from its General Operations Force as an additional security measure.

Malaysiakini has also contacted Petronas, as the owner and operator of Bintulu's LNG facilities, for further details on the matter and is awaiting a response.

In a statement shortly after, Petronas said that it views such matters with the utmost seriousness and is working closely with the authorities to assess and address the situation.

“At present, there has been no impact on our operations and no disruptions to our supply. Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our employees, contractors, and our surrounding communities continue to be our highest priority,” it said in a statement posted on its website.

Bintulu hosts one of the world’s largest LNG production centres and plays a crucial role in Malaysia’s energy exports.

LNG exports from Bintulu also generate significant revenue for the country and are a key driver of Sarawak’s and Malaysia’s economy.
