Cops probe viral audio of political leader allegedly insulting Perlis royals

Police have received a report regarding an audio recording allegedly resembling the voice of a state political leader, believed to contain defamatory, false, and insulting remarks against Perlis royals.

The comments are said to have been directed against Raja of Perlis, Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, and the Raja Perempuan of Perlis, Tengku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid.

Arau district police chief Ahmad Mohsin Rodi said the report was lodged by Arau Umno Youth secretary Hazalan Haron at about 5.30pm yesterday, after the latter watched a TikTok video featuring the said recording.

“The statements made in the recording are believed to contain elements of defamation, falsehood, and insults against His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness.

“The contents of the recording have been publicly circulated across several social media platforms, containing false information that could tarnish the dignity, reputation, and the Perlis royal institution,” Mohsin said in a statement last night.

He added that investigations are ongoing, including to determine the relevant section under the applicable laws.

Case handed to Bukit Aman

Perlis police chief Muhammad Abdul Halim later confirmed that the case has been handed over to Bukit Aman for further investigations, with the state police to provide its assistance if needed.

State Menteri Besar Shukri Ramli has also expressed his willingness to cooperate with the police if required, noting that for now, he has not been summoned by the authorities.

“As for the circulation of the audio, I can’t comment yet because I haven’t finished listening to the recording.

“Give me some time to listen to it first, then I’ll be able to comment,” Harian Metro quoted the Sanglang assemblyperson as saying at the sidelines of an event in Kangar today.

Upholding constitutional monarchy

Meanwhile, Perlis Umno Youth secretary and acting Arau Umno Youth chief Nazrin Abdul Aziz stressed that the police report was not politically motivated, but made out of moral responsibility and a commitment to uphold the constitutional monarchy.

He said the integrity and dignity of the royal institution must always be preserved for the well-being of the people and the stability of the state.

“I believe the police will conduct a fair and professional investigation and take appropriate action if there is any breach of the law.

“I also urge all parties, especially state leaders and civil servants, to exercise prudence and caution when making statements that concern relations with the royal institution,” he said.
