Indonesian fisherfolk chase Petronas vessel away

About 100 traditional fishing boats surrounded and chased away a Petronas survey ship in waters off Ketapang, Madura Island, in Indonesia, last week.

In videos published by Indonesian website Tribunnews, a group of wooden fishing vessels can be seen approaching and encircling the Petronas vessel at about noon on Oct 17.

Fisherfolk on board the boats could be seen shouting at the Petronas vessel, Prospero 9, to stop its operations and leave the area immediately.

According to the report, an angler named Faisol Rahman said that the Petronas vessel had been operating in the area three days before the confrontation.

The fisherfolk had demanded that the Petronas ship stop laying down cables on the seabed and that it recover the cables that it had released that day.

The fisherfolk claimed that the oil and gas giant’s survey operations in the area had damaged their fishing grounds, according to the report.

Malaysiakini has reached out to Petronas for comment on the incident.
