Petronas CEO sorry over 'champagne shower' at Singapore Grand Prix revels
Petronas president and group chief executive Tengku Taufik Tengku Aziz has apologised for his “spur-of-the-moment exuberance” while celebrating the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team’s recent victory at the Singapore Grand Prix.
In a statement, Taufik said he was honoured to receive the Winning Constructor’s Trophy on behalf of the team but admitted that his actions during the post-race celebrations might have been “misplaced”.

In a statement, Taufik said he was honoured to receive the Winning Constructor’s Trophy on behalf of the team but admitted that his actions during the post-race celebrations might have been “misplaced”.
“While I can categorically state I did not consume any alcohol, as a Muslim, I should have been more aware of the sensitivities associated with taking part in such celebrations,” he said.
“Accordingly, I want to apologise for any unintended offence caused and take full responsibility for my actions,” he said.
Earlier today, Bersatu Youth information chief Harris Idaham Rashid said the wing strongly condemned Taufik’s move to take part in a champagne shower during the podium ceremony of the 2025 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix on Oct 5.
The incident occurred when George Russell, representing the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, won the race, and Taufik, in his capacity as Petronas president and CEO, went on stage to receive the team’s trophy.
Taufik today emphasised that the win was a significant milestone in Petronas’ long-standing partnership with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team.
He also expressed gratitude for the public’s continued support of the company’s involvement in the sport, which he described as “the pinnacle of motorsports competition”.
“The successes we deliver now and in the upcoming era of sustainable fuels will indeed bear testimony to Malaysian innovation and capabilities,” he added.
