Perlis Harapan backs PAS-led state govt to serve full term

Perlis Pakatan Harapan has expressed support for the PAS-led state government to continue governing until the end of its term, citing the need to maintain administrative stability.

In a statement today, it said the state government was formed based on a clear mandate from the people through a legitimate democratic process.

“The strong mandate given by the people must be respected and preserved. It is not a space for internal turmoil or power manoeuvring that would only create public anxiety and undermine confidence in state administrative institutions.

“In this regard, Perlis Harapan expresses its support for the existing state government to continue and remain in power until the end of the term,” said the state opposition.

The stance follows a meeting last night, despite Perlis Harapan chairperson Noor Amin Ahmad previously saying the coalition was prepared for a possible dissolution of the state assembly in the near future.

Perlis Harapan also said that the position was taken to ensure political harmony in the state and to safeguard the interests of the people and the royal institution.

“Government stability is a primary necessity for a small state like Perlis, not only to ensure smooth administration, but also to save government finances, avoid wastage arising from political uncertainty, and avoid undermining the people’s mandate that was legitimately given,” it added.

Bid to ouster MB

Political tensions in Perlis intensified yesterday following reported efforts to remove Menteri Besar Shukri Ramli while he was in hospital over chest pains upon returning from China.

Several media reports, citing sources, said five Bersatu assemblypersons and three from PAS had submitted statutory declarations to the Perlis ruler, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, stating they had lost confidence in the menteri besar.

The eight assemblypersons form a simple majority in the 15-seat Perlis state assembly.

Overall, Perikatan Nasional holds 14 seats - with PAS holding nine seats, while Bersatu has five.

Shukri has since been discharged and last night expressed gratitude to those who prayed for his health.

Stern warning

In a related development, Perlis Harapan warned that power manoeuvring and internal political turmoil would only create public unease and undermine confidence in the state administration.

“Open disputes only weaken governance, tarnish the state’s image, and disrupt the government’s focus on managing the people’s basic needs,” it said, adding that the state government should prioritise economic development, public well-being, job opportunities, the cost of living and sustainable progress.

Perlis Harapan also stressed the importance of mature leadership that respects the royal institution.

“A harmonious and respectful relationship with His Royal Highness, the Perlis ruler, and the palace is the main pillar of state stability and must be preserved with wisdom and an awareness of the position of the constitutional monarch,” it said.

The coalition also urged all parties within the state government to prioritise consensus and civilised dialogue to resolve differences, while reiterating its commitment to support the existing state government until the end of its term.

“Perlis Harapan will continue to stand with the existing state government, the royal institution and the interests of the people to ensure that Perlis is governed peacefully, stably and with dignity until the end of the administrative term.”

In a response, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari extended his appreciation to Perlis Harapan and took a veiled jab at Bersatu.

“Thank you, Perlis Harapan. What is strange is that there is a group that submitted names (as potential menteri besar candidates) despite being in the minority,” the Pasir Mas MP said on Facebook.

According to a report by Utusan Malaysia, Bersatu had submitted three names as potential replacements to Shukri – Abu Bakar Hamzah (Kuala Perlis), Megat Hashirat Hassan (Pauh) and Izizam Ibrahim (Titi Tinggi), while PAS has yet to nominate one from its ranks.

State PAS Youth committed to stability

Separately, Perlis PAS Youth chief Haziq Asyraf Dun warned stern action against any individual or party attempting to undermine the stability of the Perlis state government for personal or group interests.

“Perlis PAS Youth remains committed to defending the stability of the state government to ensure that the agenda of public welfare, state development, and societal well-being can be implemented as effectively as possible,” said the Beseri assemblyperson.

He added that PN had been given a clear mandate to administer the state government and that priority must always be given to the welfare of the people and the development of the state.
