No compromise: Lee urges stern action over 'bus driver with woman on lap'

An express bus driver who went viral after being recorded driving with a woman seated on his lap should have his Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence revoked, said Road Safety Council member Lee Lam Thye.

Lee also called for the company’s operating licence to be suspended, saying stern action was necessary to send a clear warning to others.

“I fully support the action taken by the Road Transport Department (RTD), which responded swiftly to complaints regarding the incident,” he said in a statement, as reported by Sinar Harian.

“This incident is extremely dangerous not only for bus passengers, but also for other road users,” he added.

Lee stressed that enforcement agencies must not compromise with offenders and should impose appropriate punishment for such violations.

He added that RTD’s swift move to open an investigation file and instruct officers to complete it within 48 hours should be commended.

He also urged passengers to act as the “eyes and ears” of RTD by reporting similar incidents.

“Enforcement action can only be effective if such behaviour is reported, ensuring the safety of passengers and other road users,” he said.

Driver’s services terminated

Previously, bus operator Sri Maju Group confirmed it had terminated the driver’s services.

The company said the incident, which went viral online, occurred during a trip from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) to Larkin, Johor Bahru, on Sunday.

It added that a police report had been lodged and the matter referred to the Land Public Transport Agency for further investigation.

Separately, the driver is expected to appear at the Jasin police headquarters to give his statement, along with the woman involved.

Jasin district police chief said both statements will be recorded as part of the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which concerns driving a vehicle recklessly or at a speed or manner dangerous to the public.

Penalties include jail up to five years, fines up to RM15,000, and driver’s licence suspension.
