• The Terengganu state government’s debt has declined significantly from about RM907 million left by the previous administration in 2017 to RM114.68 million as of March 31.

  The reduction of nearly RM800 million, or around 87 percent, indicates that the state’s debt position is now far more manageable than before, the state's official media, TRDI News reported, quoting Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

  Samsuri (above) said the outstanding loan balance as of March 31 stood at RM114,677,802.01 and that the state government remains committed to managing its finances prudently and strategically.

  Samsuri reportedly said that the remaining loans comprise RM102.80 million for water supply projects and RM11.88 million for low-cost public housing projects.

• A Malaysian detained in Japan over investigations into fraud-related offences linked to an alleged online scam syndicate operating in the country will learn his fate today as his case reaches a key stage at his final hearing at the Toyama Summary Court.

  The New Straits Times reported yesterday that Faiq Zafran Jailani was being investigated under Article 246(1) of Japan’s Penal Code for fraud and Article 60 for offences committed jointly, provisions which are similar to Sections 420 and 34 of Malaysia’s Penal Code.

  

  He is said to have travelled to Japan in November last year, with conflicting reports emerging over his arrest, including early claims that he was detained with cash and gold worth about RM500,000.

  His lawyer, Noor Svetlana Mohd Noor Nordin, said Faiq has been detained for more than six months and dismissed claims circulating that he had pleaded guilty earlier this year, describing them as inaccurate.
