Crime

• A 19-year-old has been remanded for two days to assist in investigations into a five-vehicle crash on Jalan Renggam–Simpang Renggam in Johor, which claimed the lives of five people and injured five others.

  Bernama reported that the Batu Pahat Magistrate's Court issued the remand order today to facilitate further investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 after the youth was arrested yesterday.

  Kluang district police chief Bahrin Noh said initial investigations indicated the suspect had been driving recklessly in a Mercedes-Benz A250, while his 22-year-old brother was driving a BMW 530e.

  Bahrin said the accident occurred when the BMW lost control and veered into the opposite lane, colliding with a Perodua Alza, Toyota Vios, Proton Wira, and another Mercedes-Benz before plunging into a ravine.

  The impact killed the driver of the Toyota Vios, a 36-year-old man, along with his 33-year-old wife, a 73-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl. The BMW driver died en route to the hospital.

Government appointments

• Offers to head statutory bodies or government-linked companies (GLC) are uncalled for, as such offers should not be used as a political tool, former DAP politician Ronnie Liu said.

  He also described the supposed back-up plan to make incumbent Skudai assemblyperson Marina Ibrahim head of a statutory body if she loses in the Johor polls as unacceptable and hypocritical, given that DAP used to detest such a practice.

  

  He told Malaysiakini that the positions, albeit distinct, require specialised skills, as one involves running a business and the other requires administrative skills to run government agencies.

  “No, no, no, you can argue whatever, but this comes as an afterthought.

  “Whether GLC chairperson or statutory body head, both call for special skills. Eventually, it cannot be used as payback. DAP used to say no to all these things. DAP was at the forefront of calling out this hypocrisy, and now you are doing it,” he lamented.

Assault allegation

• Bersatu Youth has called for a full police investigation into allegations that Beruas Umno chief and former senator, Azhar Ahmad, allegedly slapped UiTM Kelantan student leader Nik Alif Aiman Abdul Ariffahmi during an official event.

  Its information chief, Harris Idaham Rashid, said Azhar’s denial was insufficient to resolve the matter, adding that the allegation should be investigated under Section 352 of the Penal Code.

  

  In a statement today, Harris also urged witnesses to come forward and provide statements at their nearest police station, following the incident involving the late PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s grandson.

Football

• The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has moved to exclude the honorary president position from the proposed 2026 Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) statute.

  Asserting that such roles are no longer relevant in modern football governance, AFC secretary-general Windsor Paul John highlighted that the practice has been dropped by major football governing bodies, including the International Federation of Association Football (Fifa).

  

  On wider proposed reforms involving a major restructuring of standing committees, Bernama reported Windsor as saying that the AFC backed having subject-matter experts chair key areas such as stadium management, security, integrity, referees, and medical committees.

  The matter is part of 94 articles proposed in the 2026 FAM statute, which will be tabled by the AFC during an FAM Extraordinary Congress in Petaling Jaya this Thursday (June 4).

Diplomatic ties

• Malaysia and India have the potential to strengthen cooperation in history and heritage documentation, said Deputy National Unity Minister Yuneswaran Ramaraj.

  

  Bernama reported Yuneswaran as saying that his recent working trip to the Tamil Nadu Archives and Historical Research facility in Chennai could open up more opportunities for collaboration.

  Describing his working trip as a meaningful experience, Yuneswaran said the role of heritage documentation is crucial to preserving national records, including official government documents, for present and future generations.

  He also encouraged youths to view history as guidance in building a future rooted in identity and cultural values.
