A PAS leader has posted a cryptic message as the Islamist party meets tonight to review its ties with Bersatu, which have been strained due to several events, including the Perlis menteri besar crisis.

A few hours before the meeting was scheduled to take place, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari took to Facebook and posted: “trust that has been broken cannot be easily restored”.

Fadhli (above) said political bonds that have been built on trust and cooperation cannot be evaluated based on good statements alone.

“I am of the opinion that whatever decision that PAS is expected to make soon will definitely not just take into consideration the current situation, but also past events that have eroded that trust.

“Trust cannot be earned through mere words. It must be built through actions. When that trust is betrayed, the process to rebuild it is harder than the process to destroy it,” he stated.

The meeting tonight at PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur will be chaired by its president, Abdul Hadi Awang.

On May 22, Hadi had criticised Bersatu’s conduct towards PAS.

Among others, Hadi had pointed to the Perlis menteri besar crisis last year, which saw Abu Bakar Hamzah from Bersatu replacing PAS’ Shukri Ramli after the latter resigned, citing health concerns.

The Marang MP also criticised the decision made by two Negeri Sembilan Bersatu assemblypersons who withdrew their statutory declarations supporting the removal of Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun over the ongoing dispute between the state nobility.

Why the rush?

Elaborating, Fadhli said that when Shukri was replaced with Abu Bakar, many have questioned Bersatu’s rush in nominating its candidate for the job.

“At the time, were the close ties shared with PAS really taken into account?

“If the reason was that there was a royal decree, the question is simple - did a royal decree truly exist as has been claimed?” Fadhli asked.

Earlier, another PAS leader took to social media to dismiss an explanation from Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, who had written to PAS on May 25 to dispute the allegations levelled against Bersatu.

“The difference is that PAS does not just come out with a press statement just to say that we received a letter and we will respond to the letter,” said PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden.
