PAS ends political ties with Bersatu

After six years of being together, PAS has decided to terminate its political cooperation with Bersatu, said party president Abdul Hadi Awang.

Hadi said the PAS central working committee made the decision in a special meeting held Monday night.

“The party also decided to explore a form of political understanding and electoral pact in the interest of ummah unity, in preparation for the state polls and the 16th general election.

“We are also accepting the aspirations of academics, professionals, political leaders, and activists to join PAS,” Hadi said in a statement.

According to the Marang MP, they agreed to endorse a position taken by the PAS ulama council last week that the party’s policy, legal, and public interest considerations on political cooperation must be based on the “principle of ummah unity”.

The decision came at the height of a strained relationship between the Perikatan Nasional components, which saw top leaders from both parties openly criticising each other.

Hadi had previously accused Bersatu, led by Muhyiddin Yassin, of making unilateral decisions and failing to maintain internal discipline within the coalition.

The parties’ ties had soured after a political manoeuvre in Perlis last year, which caused the Islamist party to lose the menteri besar post to Bersatu.
