Albert vs Azam

• Former MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki has made good on his threat to file legal action against businessperson Albert Tei over allegedly false and defamatory statements.

  In a statement today, Messrs Zain Megat & Murad said a writ of summons and statement of claim were filed at the Shah Alam High Court, with Azam seeking damages and permanent injunctive relief.

  

  The legal action, the lawyers said, is aimed at “vindicating” Azam’s reputation and good name built over nearly four decades of public service.

Politics

• Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin expressed regret that the cooperation forged with PAS, built on a spirit of noble understanding and shared principles, has been called off by the Islamist party.

  In a statement today, he said Bersatu will remain within Perikatan Nasional, as it is the coalition’s lynchpin party, and hoped that those who share PN’s aspirations will remain loyal.

  

  “Party members and comrades-in-arms must remain focused on efforts to strengthen PN. Leaders and members at every level must continue to place the interests of the people as their foremost priority and face this latest challenge with even greater resolve,” Muhyiddin added.

  He stressed that Bersatu had reiterated its commitment to maintaining good relations with PAS within PN on June 7.

  Yesterday, however, PAS severed all political ties with Bersatu.

• Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin said that the party cannot be linked to the ongoing political rift between PAS and Bersatu.

  Khaled lamented that whenever issues arise involving rival parties, Umno is often accused of being behind them.

  

  “As long as they don’t accuse Umno of causing it. Every time something happens, they say it’s Umno’s doing. Umno is good then,” Malaysia Gazette reported him saying at a press conference, after the 2026 Armed Forces Education Excellence Awards ceremony at Wisma Perwira ATM.

Artificial intelligence

• Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has cautioned against allowing artificial intelligence to erode human compassion and moral judgment, even as Malaysia pursues its goal of becoming an AI nation by 2030.

  Speaking during a special lecture at the University of Tokyo today, Anwar questioned whether the rapid advancement of AI is leading humanity towards greater progress or deeper inequalities, warning that the technology tends to favour those with greater access to data, energy, talent, and capital.

  

  The premier emphasised that Malaysia does not reject AI, but it must be used to improve the human experience, especially for a nation that is approaching an ageing population.

  “We support technological progress, including AI. But when it enters homes, schools, hospitals, offices, public institutions, and even our imagination, the challenge becomes immense,” he said.
