Assault allegation

• Beruas Umno chief Azhar Ahmad and the late PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s grandson, Nik Alif Aiman Abdul Ariffahmi, issued a joint reconciliation announcement over the alleged slapping incident.

  In the statement posted on Azhar's (above, second left) Facebook last night, he said they have resolved the matter through discussion and apologised to one another.

  Both parties also agreed not to make any further statements or actions that could damage each other’s reputation.

Politics

• PAS’ decision to end its political cooperation with Bersatu was made for the common good after various efforts had been undertaken, but the situation remained unchanged, said Annuar Musa.

  In a statement on Facebook today, the Islamist party's central working committee member said the decision at this stage, however, concerns only the cooperation between the two parties and in no way involves Perikatan Nasional.

  "The position of PN will be discussed with its component parties, particularly PAS, Gerakan and MIPP. Discussions will be held this week,” he said.

  Annuar added that PAS will ensure that any subsequent action within PN must be based on the PN constitution and "not on the attitude of superiority of any individual or any one party".

• Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh opined that the unity of the Malay-Muslims in Malaysia does not have to be under the Muafakat Nasional banner, and that such unity can be pursued under any name.

  

  In a Facebook post late last night, he said this is especially when the name itself has already been registered under an NGO and belongs to another party.

  His post appeared to be in response to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who yesterday dismissed any speculation of Umno and PAS reviving the former pact.

World Cup

• Former Gopeng MP and former deputy health minister Dr Lee Boon Chye today vowed not to watch any telecast of the World Cup that will be held in the US.

  

  "For the love of football and humanity, I will not watch any telecast of Fifa World Cup 2026 matches which are being played in the United States. Just hope everyone does the same!" Lee posted on Facebook.

  Lee, a cardiologist by training, has consistently spoken out against what he views as US interventionism and involvement in wars.
