PM threatens legal action against Tuan Ibrahim over 'defamation'

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has threatened legal action against PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man over a series of allegedly defamatory statements made during a political rally in Pahang on June 14.

Anwar’s lawyer Sankara Nair said a letter of demand has been sent via email to Tuan Ibrahim (above, left) at 6pm today, giving the Kubang Kerian MP 48 hours to respond.

“The letter of demand requires, among others, the immediate withdrawal of the impugned statements, an unconditional public apology, an undertaking not to repeat the allegations, and payment of damages and legal costs.

“The recipient has been given 48 hours to respond, failing which our instructions are to commence legal proceedings without further notice,” he said in a statement.

The statement did not specify the amount of damages sought.

Sankara said the letter was issued at the prime minister’s direction regarding the allegedly defamatory statements that were subsequently republished on social media.

When contacted, Sankara said the alleged defamatory remarks include accusations that Anwar has lost control of his political partners, interfered in Negeri Sembilan’s royal succession, used the police against government critics, and presided over an administration plagued by crises, corruption, misappropriation, and abuse of power.

Tuan Ibrahim allegedly made the defamatory remarks at a PAS ceramah in Felda Jenderak Utara, Kuala Krau, on June 14.

Parts of the speech were posted on Tuan Ibrahim’s Facebook page and YouTube the following day.
