Airport security

• The Home Ministry will present a plan to the cabinet next week to enhance airport security controls, said its minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

  This followed a recent incident that saw a Malaysian pilot arrested in Indonesia over suspicion of trafficking 25kg of drugs, which prompted the cabinet to instruct all the relevant security agencies to draw up plans to strengthen checks at the country's entry points.

  

  According to Saifuddin, the plan would include realignment of procedures in operating airport scanning machines, which he said are being operated by the Malaysian Airport's Aviation Security teams and follow standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation that emphasise detecting bombs, sharp weapons, and firearms.

  "If contraband appears on the screen, it can certainly be detected by the scanning machine.

  "However, the screening procedures do not fall under the routine security checks carried out by the police or the Border Control and Protection Agency, so we need to realign the procedures," Bernama quoted him as saying.

Court

• The Kuala Lumpur High Court will decide on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s interlocutory application in an ongoing sexual assault suit filed by his former aide Yusoff Rawther on Sept 21 at 4.30pm.

  Yusoff’s lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali confirmed the date to the media today.

  

  Anwar filed his application under Order 33 Rule 2 and Rule 5 of the Rules of Court 2012 in March, where he sought for the court to determine the mode of the case trial, among other issues, including Yusoff’s whereabouts on Oct 2, 2018, the day of the alleged assault.

• The Court of Appeal has dismissed former People's Progressive Party (MyPPP) president M Kayveas' appeal against a High Court decision that denied him leave to challenge Maglin Dennis D'Cruz's appointment as the party's new president.

  

  According to Bernama, the decision was delivered today by a panel of judges comprising Lim Chong Fong, Lim Hock Leng and Ahmad Shahrir Salleh.

  In the unanimous decision read by Lim, the appellate court held that the High Court had correctly decided that it is non-justiciable due to the unambiguous terms of Section 18C of the Societies Act.

  He said since Kavyeas was no longer a member of MyPPP, any judgment would be academic.
