• The Perak DAP committee has unanimously resolved that the party should remain in the federal government, ahead of a crucial party congress on Sunday to vote on the issue.

  In a statement posted on Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming’s Facebook page, the committee said the party must fulfil the people’s mandate, drive reforms, and check against “extremist” forces in PAS and Umno.

  

  “Although facing tough challenges, having decision-making power and a voice within the government enables us to drive reforms, fulfil commitments, and spark national development.

  “Therefore, mobilising to fulfil the people’s mandate while staying true to our original aspiration and remembering our mission is the exact stance resolved by Perak DAP today,” it said.

Elections

• In a push for the government to expedite electoral reforms, Bersih and Global Bersih have called for postal voting to be extended to Malaysians from Sabah and Sarawak living in Peninsular Malaysia, and vice versa.

  Bersih chairperson Faisal Abdul Aziz said the move could encourage greater voter turnout, especially among young East Malaysians who may be deterred from returning home to vote by high travel costs.

  

  “Besides, we also have to bear in mind that due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, oil prices have become volatile, which in turn will affect flight prices to and from Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.

  Meanwhile, Bersih executive director Asraf Sharafi cited GE15 figures showing only 56 percent of Sabah voters aged 18 to 24 voted, while turnout among those aged 25 to 30 was 54.4 percent.

  Asraf stressed that the reforms must be implemented swiftly, ideally before the next general election is called.
