Nepal floods

- Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has proposed a formal mechanism to assist the families of 55 Malaysians still missing following last month’s devastating floods in Nepal.

Taking to Facebook, Anwar said he raised the matter during a phone call with Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah this morning, before departing for a three-day working visit to China.

“This is important to help the affected families deal with legal, financial and administrative matters,” he said, adding that he would formally write to Balendra detailing the proposal.

According to Anwar, Balendra described the destruction as being akin to a tsunami and assured him that search efforts would continue despite increasingly difficult conditions.

Anwar also thanked the Nepalese government, authorities and rescue teams for their efforts.

- Meanwhile, Balendra said that during his phone conversation with Anwar, he raised concerns about the involvement of syndicates and intermediaries in recruiting Nepalese workers for employment in Malaysia.

Taking to Facebook, Balendra said the discussion was aimed at pursuing joint efforts to make labour migration between the two countries dignified, transparent and free from exploitation.

He also said both governments needed to find a lasting solution, stressing that unfair and impractical recruitment practices were unacceptable.

Balendra noted that Anwar had also agreed that such syndicates and middleman practices should be eliminated, and that Human Resources Minister R Ramanan will be instructed to coordinate with his Nepalese counterpart on the next steps.

Asian Games gold

- Karate exponent Adeola Fay Robert enjoyed a dream Asian Games debut, delivering Malaysia’s first gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games at Toyohashi Gymnasium today.

Bernama reported the 20-year-old Sabah-born athlete defeated Iran’s Fatemehzahra Saeidabadi 6-4 in the women’s under-55kg kumite final.

Adeola secured her place in the final by defeating Kazakhstan’s Bella Samasheva 5-4 in the semi-finals, following wins over Kuwait’s Asrar Jasem 9-1 and Uzbekistan’s Sevinch Rakhimova 8-7 in the earlier rounds.

The victory continued the athlete’s positive momentum after she won a bronze medal at the 2025 Bangkok SEA Games.

Adeola also ended Malaysia’s wait for a women’s karate gold medal, with the country’s last victory coming from Syakilla Salni at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

Tasek Bera enforcement

- Police have received 24 reports concerning the ongoing enforcement operation at the Tasek Bera Conservation Forest Reserve in Pahang.

Bernama reported acting Pahang police chief Azry Akmar Ayob said the reports were lodged by parties including Orang Asli community members and enforcement personnel.

“The operation is still ongoing and we urge the people to cooperate with enforcement officers on duty,” Azry was quoted as saying after a handing-over ceremony at the Pahang Police Contingent headquarters in Kuantan.

Azry added that the investigation paper involving five individuals arrested on Sept 15 for allegedly obstructing enforcement personnel would soon be referred to the deputy public prosecutor.

Police previously detained four women and a man, aged between their 30s and 60s, under Section 186 of the Penal Code.
