Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s claim that his life is under threat has left Penang Gerakan Youth chief Oh Tong Keong unimpressed - he wants proof.

“The chief minister should not have said it unless he has proof to substantiate his claim that he could be assassinated,” he said.

Tanjung Gerakan Youth chief H’ng Khoon Leng has lodged a report at the George Town police headquarters, urging the police to increase protection for the chief minister.

Oh further said Lim should have beefed up security discreetly instead of politicising the matter.

“Now his disclosure could discourage investors and create political uncertainty. It will also depict a tainted picture of Penangites,” he added.

Persistent rumours

On Sunday, Lim had told reporters that, since the Pakatan Rakyat came to power in Penang last March, there have been rumours that he might become a target of assassins.

The rumours intensified after the fall of the Pakatan Rakyat government in Perak earlier this month.

Lim said he has received numerous phone calls and text-messages expressing concerns over his safety, so much so that he has occasionally switched off his hand-phone.

On one occasion, his wife and Kota Laksamana state assemblyperson Betty Chew was left anxious when she could not get through.

Lim added that he has been advised not to get too close to people at events for security reasons.
