Genting International will build the world's largest oceanarium if it wins the bid from the Singapore government for the city-state's second casino complex.

The resort will also feature a water park, a maritime museum and six hotels offering more than 1,800 rooms, Genting said at a press briefing after presenting the bid to Singapore authorities.

Genting and Star Cruises, both part of the Malaysian casino operator Genting Group, have tied-up with Universal Parks and Resorts of the United States to bid for the project on Singapore's Sentosa island.

"We believe we have submitted a great proposal for the Sentosa integrated resort," said Lim Kok Thay, chairman and chief executive of the Genting Group.

"Our proposed development has attractions that are world class destinations in their own right. It will be a resort of resorts," he said.

The eight-hectare (19.76 acres) oceanarium at Resorts World at Sentosa will house as many as 700,000 aquatic animals and it also includes a 6.6 million gallon (25.08 litres) lagoon to allow visitors to snorkel and dive with whale sharks, Genting said.

Genting said it will also re-invest US$200 every year into the resort to upkeep the attractions to maintain the appeal of the development.

The Malaysian group is in a three-way race to win the Sentosa project, with the winner announced by the end of the year.

The other two bidding parties are Bahamas-based Kerzner International which has teamed up with Singapore's CapitaLand and the privately held Las Vegas firm Eighth Wonder.

The city-state in May awarded Las Vegas Sands a licence to build a US$3.2-billion casino project in the waterfront Marina Bay area.

Singapore last year ended a ban on casino gambling in a bid to spruce up its staid image and attract more tourists.
