Will Najib get more prison time?
Najib Abdul Razak’s hopes of ringing in the New Year at home were dashed on Monday.
The High Court ruled that the royal decree granting him house arrest was invalid and not in compliance with the Federal Constitution.
However, bigger problems lie ahead for the former premier.
On Friday a separate judge will deliver a decision on his 1MDB corruption trial.
If found guilty, it could see Najib’s time in prison extended.
For the SRC International case in which he is serving six years in jail, Najib could get an early release in August 2026 for good behaviour after serving two-thirds of his revised prison sentence.

PKR sides with Umno over DAP
The High Court rejecting Najib’s house arrest bid led to a flare-up in tensions between Umno and DAP after Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin said the ruling was a cause to celebrate.
Umno leaders are threatening to pull out of the government over the slight.
Meanwhile, DAP’s Pakatan Harapan partner PKR is siding with Umno in this fight.
Several PKR leaders have blasted Yeo for being insensitive, while PKR president Anwar Ibrahim gave a veiled rebuke that those who have no sympathy for Najib should not make matters worse.
Anwar’s former aide, Shamsul Iskandar Akin, who is on trial for graft as well, also called for empathy to be shown towards Najib.

Another case of police brutality
A 20-year-old man was allegedly beaten and burned by police during an arrest, only for officers to admit later that they had detained the wrong person.
Wan Muhammad Daniel was arrested as a suspect in a snatch theft case. When police nabbed him at his grandfather’s house, he was allegedly slapped by an officer.
Later in detention, an officer is alleged to have lit a lighter and held the flame near his genitals. A lit cigarette was also used to burn his lower lip.
Daniel’s mother alleged that a police officer tried to obstruct her when she attempted to lodge a police report.
Lawyers for Liberty have picked up the case and are seeking justice through the courts.
