Can Harapan get Chinese votes?
Pakatan Harapan has a major problem in Johor.
The coalition has relied heavily on non-Malay votes, especially from the Chinese, to win against competitors who carve up the Malay electorate.
However, a straw poll by Malaysiakini in Johor’s small towns found a noticeable trend - Chinese voters appear to have become either apathetic or disgruntled.
“Whoever wins, the Chinese will struggle,” one voter told us.
Even a small dip in Chinese votes could be disastrous for Harapan, especially if turnout is low.

Anwar skirts election rules
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim skirted with election rules prohibiting goodies for votes.
When asked by a youth whether STPM students - who are old enough to vote - would get an allowance, Anwar did not choose to keep mum.
Instead, he hinted that it would be forthcoming under Budget 2027.
Section 10(a) of the Election Offences Act is supposed to penalise even a hint of bribery - as even indirect promises are considered an offence.
However, it’s extremely unlikely that Anwar will get punished over this or be found in the wrong.
