Gerakan vice-president Mah Siew Keong today called on the mass media to ignore the vitriol spewed by Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali.

This is because the Pasir Mas parliamentarian, who is in the headlines again for saying that Perkasa is ready to wage a crusade against Christians, is only saying such scandalous things for publicity.

"(Ibrahim) is making outrageous statements to get publicity, and as such the press should stop giving (him) big headlines.

NONE "The media also carries the responsibility of ensuring a united and peaceful Malaysia.

"The more publicity given to Ibrahim Ali, the more inflammatory statements he will make," Mah ( right ) said in a statement today.

He said Ibrahim is only a "lone voice" who does not represent the majority and as such, he should not be given prominence.

Nevertheless, Mah echoed Gerakan president Koh Tsu Koon in calling for action against Ibrahim, who Mah said "has incited racial and religious" matters in his speeches.

'Act against Perkasa or lose votes'

Malaysians for Civil Liberties Movement president Haris Ibrahim said Perkasa is no longer a bogeyman to scare the rakyat into submission, but rather a real threat.

As such, he said in a statement today, Ibrahim and Perkasa should not be protected by the BN government, much less with statements denying their extremist tendencies.

NONE "(Home Minister) Hishammuddin (Hussein) expressly denied that Ibrahim is an extremist, but said that there are extremists in the Chinese community. Is the minister confirming that his ministry practises double standards when it comes to national security?" he asked.

Haris ( left ) said that, if the BN government fails to act against those making racial and religion-based statements that are divisive, then the people would vote "for a government that will (act)".

Last Saturday, Ibrahim said Perkasa is willing to wage a crusade against Christians who were alleged in an Utusan Malaysia report to be plotting to usurp the position of Islam as Malaysia's official religion.

He said that, while Umno had its faults, it remains the only party that can safeguard the "dignity" of Malay Muslims against such threats.

Ibrahim, a former Umno supreme council member, was once with Semangat 46 and won his Pasir Mas seat under the PAS banner. He is now an Independent MP.
