The organisers of the conference which has been linked to the ‘Christian conspiracy’ to usurp Islam in Malaysia has today disassociated itself from the dinner where the alleged plot was hatched.

In a letter address to pastors in Penang posted on its website, National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF) Malaysia secretary-general Samuel Ang said that the dinner hosted by Jelutong parliamentarian Jeff Ooi has nothing to do with them.

jeff ooi on utusan mohamed razali report 140511 01 “The Unashamedly Ethical Campaign (UEC) is in no way linked to the event of the dinner hosted by Jeff Ooi ( right ) on May 5 at the Red Rock Hotel, whereby allegations were made by bloggers and Utusan (Malaysia) .

“Both the (UEC) conferences in Sibu and Kuala Lumpur were free from any of such incidents,” he said.

On May 7, Utusan ran a front page report speculating that church leaders and the DAP are conspiring to make Christianity the official religion of Malaysia and to install a Christian prime minister at the event hosted by Ooi.

In response, Ooi lodged a police report denying the claim and had on May 14 said that the by invitation-only dinner was held on May 5.

He said that he was invited by a Christian community, but not NCEF as church leaders with whom he had become acquainted with during the Sarawak election were expected to be present.

According to Ang, the conference was meant to encourage the participants of 100 people (and not 1,700 as reported by Utusan and 50 as claimed by Ooi) to live ethically.

The global movement, which began in South Africa, first came to Malaysia via a conference in Sibu from April 29 to May 1, followed by Kuala Lumpur from May 1 to 2 and then to Penang from May 6 to 7.

“On behalf of the evangelical community in Malaysia, NECF Malaysia would encourage all to reject unfounded claims and stand together in upholding love, charity, compassion, righteousness and mutual respect seeking to contribute positively towards the development and well-being of the nation as a whole.”
