Three of the five independent committees monitoring the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) need to scrutinise the report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry on Teoh Beng Hock’s Death to improve the weaknesses and inadequacies in the MACC.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dr Koh Tsu Koon said the three committees concerned were the panel to review the MACC’s operational process, the Community Complaints Committee and the Special Committee, comprising members of Parliament from the Barisan Nasional (BN) and the opposition parties.

“These committees will scrutinise the report from all aspects to ensure that all weaknesses in the MACC can be corrected so that the two cases of deaths, Teoh Beng Hock and Customs officer Ahmad Sarbaini Mohamad do not recur.

“I hope the government will also take stern action against three MACC officers involved who had breached the interrogation procedure which led to the death of Teoh Beng Hock,” he said at a media conference after opening the delegates conference of the Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan), Kedah at the Chinese Assembly Hall, Tanjung Bendahara in Alor Setar today.

Koh, who is also the Gerakan president, said the three independent committees must meet immediately and study the report which had been completed to enable the government institution to carry out its tasks efficiently besides gaining the people’s trust.

Meanwhile, Koh said the DAP had disputed the transparency of the report on Teoh’s death purely to politicise the issue for the party’s political interest.

“They had planned in their series of ceramah and so on to dispute the report made by the royal commission that the MACC purportedly was still keeping several items of important evidence to be included in the report.

“I hope the people will not believe the DAP’s political ploy and the Gerakan is prepared to dispel all the allegations made by the DAP,” he said.

He said that if the MACC had hidden any evidence, the DAP must submit valid proof so that an investigation could be carried out again.
