Law professor Abdul Aziz Bari, whose suspension by Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) was lifted yesterday, said the situation is from over. In fact, it has worsened.

NONE "They (the university) expect me to work and do things as usual, but I remain a suspect as the police continue to harass me," he told Malaysiakini .

Aziz said that, while the UIA investigation has not been concluded, his suspension was lifted "to appease the public".

"What will come after this? Disciplinary action from UIA?"

Or, he asked, would the police recommend that he be prosecuted under the Sedition Act?

The constitutional law expert said he had to continue working despite being troubled by these uncertainties.

Mindful of this, Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) plans to proceed with voicing the students' protest later today.

NONE In a press statement issued this morning, the coalition said it wants to create awareness that academic freedom is being stifled and that this extends beyond Aziz's case.

"The protest is also to urge the UIA administration to stop its investigation (against Aziz), even though the suspension has been lifted."

'Najib afraid of undergraduates'

The student activists are expected to gather at the entrance of UIA at 7pm today.

An update from national news agency Bernama said Najib's speech will be read by Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

SMM then released another statement through its president Ahmad Syukri Abd Razab, taunting Najib for turning tail in the face of students' protest.

"SMM feels the prime minister's decision to cancel his visit was done out of fear of meeting the undergraduates," he said.

"The demonstration and handing over of a memorandum tonight will continue. We expect Hishammuddin to accept the memorandum in the place of the prime minister."

Police make another call on Aziz

This afternoon, police made another call on Aziz, this time at his home in Selayang.

"Three police officers came to take pictures, inside and outside the house, around 2.30pm today," Aziz's lawyer Zulqarnain Lukman said.

Zulqarnian said the police explained that this was done on the instruction of the prosecution unit chief in the Attororney-General’s Chambers.

"The investigation papers have already been submitted to the Selangor deputy public prosecutor but were sent back to the police because more details were needed," he said.

Yesterday police took Aziz to his office at UIA to take photographs of his room and seized his laptop .

Aziz is being investigated under Section 4 of the Sedition Act for commenting on the Selangor sultan's decree related to the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department's search at a church compound in Damansara Utama on Aug 3, the same reason that led to his suspension by the university.
