Sunday's anti-Lynas Himpunan Hijau 2.0 rally will take place at the MPK4 field, down the road from the original planned venue in Kuantan.

The field, also known as Padang Ragbi Kemunting, is about 2km from the original venue and is at the corner of Jalan Tanah Putih and Jalan Kemunting.

“The police have agreed to provide assistance, security and traffic control for the event, in accordance with the new Peaceful Assembly Act,” Chin said when contacted.

He said the new venue, “just down the road from the MPK1 field”, can accommodate the same number of people and was the venue for  last year's Merdeka celebration.

Among those representing Pahang police were state police chief Sharifuddin Ab Ghani and Kuantan OCPD Jasmani Yusoff.

“We expect a surge in participants as many had initially been apprehensive of police action,” Chin said.

The organisers estimate a turnout of 20,000 people, with PAS promising to mobilise 10,000 members, including those in neighbouring Terengganu districts.

“We don’t want anybody getting hurt. We’ll assemble peacefully without any violence and will get everybody to comply with the law.

“Our previous rally had been tainted by intimidation from pro-Lynas groups,” he said.

Organisers ‘regretful’ at

MPK’s actions

The organisers are nevertheless regretful about the actions of the Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK).

NONE MPK declined to consider the organisers’ application to use the MPK1 field without a support letter from the police.

Yesterday, the council  it began fencing up the field, saying it was carrying out renovations in preparation for the Malaysia Games (Sukma).

“But the Sukma is in June! They could have at least allowed us to use the field on Sunday,” Chin said.

The rally - the second since last September - will  be on for three hours from 9.30am. Concurrent solidarity rallies are being organised in other states, including capital city Kuala Lumpur.
