The Sulu sultanate denied media reports claiming that Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Esmail Kiram II, the brother of Sulu sultan Jamalul Kiram III, met to negotiate the conflict in Sabah.

 

Esmail II and Najib had never met, let alone talk, said Abraham Idjirani, sultanate spokesman and secretary general.

 

The photos of the supposed meeting that is currently circulating on the Internet could have been fabricated, he added.

 

NONE Esmail II last went to Sabah on the last week of January before the standoff started. He only stayed in Semporna and did not go to Kuala Lumpur, Idjirani said.

 

However, the spokesperson said that Esmail II did try to convince his brother Azzimudie @ Agbimuddin Kiram to reconsider his plan to go to Sabah before the standoff started.

 

"(Esmail II) did not act as a negotiator although he did want to talk to PM Najib for a long time now but was not granted an audience," Idjirani ( right ) said.

 

A report from Malaysiakini said PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim called for an investigation into the supposed meeting between Esmail II and PM Najib and former minister Aziz Shamsuddin.
