NONE Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Said ( right) has asked the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to find out if there were elements of corruption in construction of the RM6 million Kampung Tebauk mosque in Kuala Nerus, the ceiling of which collapsed yesterday.

“The Public Works Department (PWD) also has to look into this. Obviously there is something wrong,” Ahmad told reporters after witnessing the signing of a MoU between the Central Terengganu Development Authority and the Malaysian Agricultural Research Development Institute yesterday, Bernama reported.

He said such collapses in buildings in Terengganu were very embarrassing, so much so the state was now being called ‘Terengganu Darul Runtuh’ (the state of collapsing buildings).

State PWD director Shafii Mohamad said the contractor and the building materials suppliers concerned must bear full responsibility for the collapse.

Reconstruction would only be carried out after a forensics audit was done by experts from the PWD headquarters, Shafii told a news conference called in the aftermath of the mosque ceiling collapse.

He added that safety of mosques built in the state normally came with 10-year guarantees and that the incident should not have occurred because the PWD had approved the building.

 'Series of collapses'

On May 22, the Binjai Kertas mosque in Hulu Terengganu also saw its ceiling collapse.

NONE In February, the roof of the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium ( left ) in the state collapsed for for the second time . The first collapse was in 2008.

Meanwhile, according to Sinar Harian , there had been 14 such incidences of collapsing buildings since 2008 in Terengganu.

Among the notable ones include the Sultan Mahmud Airport where its ceiling came off and the Kemaman International Centre where its balcony collapsed, both in 2008.

In 2009, The roof of Masjid Kampung Batu Putih, Kerteh collapsed and later that year the glass roof of the Kuala Berang bus terminal also came apart.

Such collapses had continued to persist until today, prompting Ahmad Said to finally call for MACC's intevention.
