In a statement today, MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon said being the backbone of BN with the largest number of elected representatives, Umno cannot remain mum.
"If Umno remains quiet, the people will start to worry because once hudud is implemented, it will change the system in our country and will significantly impact non-Muslims.
"We understand that PAS' call for the implementation of hudud law is a political trick, and that DAP's attacks against MCA is meant to sow discord among BN parties," he added.
In view of this, Chong, who is also a senator, said MCA Youth hopes that Umno would make a stand that preserves the harmony in BN.
He was responding to Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, who called on MCA not to make rash decisions over this issue.
Khairy was reacting to the statement by MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong that the party may review its position in BN if Umno backed PAS on the hudud issue.
PAS intends to table a Private Member’s Bill at the next Parliament sitting in order to implement hudud law in Kelantan.
The move has also caused fissures in the opposition bloc, with DAP protesting against its ally's theocratic ambitions.
Meanwhile, Chong also schooled Khairy on the rights of non-Muslim component parties in BN.
He said these parties have the right to state their stand on any issue.
"It is also our responsibility to reflect the aspirations of the non-Muslim community over the implementation of hudud law," he added.
