PKR elections at the Kota Raja division was suspended today when a ballot box was "smashed" resulting in a scuffle.

According to incumbent division chief Dr Xavier Jayakumar, a man had tried to seize the ballot box and smashed it to the ground causing ballot papers to be scattered on the floor.

"A fight ensued but there were no injuries," he said when contacted.

He said the incident happened at about 4pm after more than 1000 members had cast their votes, at a community hall in Klang.

Polling, which was supposed to end at 5pm, was suspended after the incident.

"It is sad that this had happened...We will be lodging an official report to the polls committee," he said.

Xavier ( left ), who is also contesting for division chief, stressed that the person who allegedly smashed the ballot box was not his supporter.

This is the second chaotic scene to take place at the Kota Raja PKR during party polls.

Kota Raja members had reportedly thrown chairs at each other in the party's first 'one-member one-vote' election in 2010.

'More than half of S'gor polls suspended'

A similar scene broke out in Kuala Langat, Bernama reported, when a group of "angry" men smashed several ballot boxes five minutes to close of voting.

The men also allegedly attacked Kuala Langat MP and division chief candidate Abdullah Sani, and several polling officers.

However, the polls were not suspended at Kuala Langat and all ballots cast sent to the headquarters in Petaling Jaya, it reported.

Polls were suspended in 12 of Selangor's 22 divisions, including Kuala Selangor, where Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim is contesting for division chief.

Other affected divisions are Sabak Bernam, Klang, Shah Alam, Kapar, Sungai Besar, Subang, Hulu Langat, Hulu Selangor, Sepang and Selayang.

Polling was suspended in most divisions due to allegations of cheating, it reported.

Meanwhile, polls committee chairperson Johari Abdul (above) confirmed to Malaysiakini that polling at several Selangor divisions have been suspended.

However, he said that the committee is currently investigating the matter and will make an announcement later.

The polls committee earlier suspended 17 divisions nationwide due to "problems in the polling process", including ballot stuffing in Batang Sadong.
