AirAsia Flight Z272 overshot its runway after landing at Kalibo International Airport, Philippines.

Several passengers have posted photograph of the Airbus A320 which is seen parked on the grass apron instead of the tarmac.

A passenger, Jet Damazo Santos, said passengers had to disembark the aircraft using the emergency slides.

“Nobody seems to be hurt. Weather was bad... Plane came to a very abrupt stop.

“Engine was shut immediately. We were told to leave bags and disembark as soon as possible.

“Fire truck was waiting. seems handled well,” she said in a series of Twitter postings.

Santos said an earlier Cebu Pacific Air flight was also unable to land at the airport, resulting in the AirAsia flight being delayed by two hours.

According to flight tracking portal FlightRadar24, the aircraft departed Manila at 4.58pm and landed in Kalibo at 5.41pm.

AirAsia goes under the name of AirAsia Zest in the Philippines.

‘Air travel jitters’

The incident comes amid heightened concerns among air travellers after Singapore-bound  AirAsia Flight QZ8501 from Surabaya lost contact with air traffic control on Monday.

A multi-national search and rescue operation found the aircraft to have crashed into the Java Sea and efforts to recover the dead is still under way.

Earlier today, AirAsia Thailand’s Flight FD3254 bound for Khon Kaen turned back to Don Mueang International Airport, Bangkok after its pilot heard “irregular noises”.

However engineers on the ground ruled out any technical troubles and the flight was allowed to resume to its destination.

Yesterday, AirAsia Flight AK6242 bound for Langkawi turned back to Penang International Airport after an unspecified “technical problem” .

Air turn backs are not uncommon in commercial air travel, but a string of air disasters has created jitters among travellers.
