Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin today said although he agreed with the call made by Umno Deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin on 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), leaking the video clip was not the right thing to do.

Muhyiddin, in the video clip which was uploaded by former New Straits Times editor Firdaus Abdullah, had said that the 1MDB board must be sacked and investigated by the police.

"Our stance is that there must be secrecy in the party. That was a closed-door session with the deputy prime minister.

"Although I think what he said was very important, leaking the video was not a right thing to do," said Khairy in a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) today.

Khairy said action must also be taken on the person responsible for leaking the information.

"Even though we agree (with what Muhyiddin ( photo ) said), it's not right," he said.

When asked to comment further on the differing opinions between Umno vice presidents Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Mohd Shafie Apdal on the matter, Khairy pointed out that Shafie merely said that leaking the video was not a crime.

"However, it (leaking the video) is against the party's ethics. So it's not right to say Zahid and Shafie had differing opinions," he said.

Zahid said that no mercy will be shown to the Umno leader who leaked the video while Shafie had said that spreading the video was not a criminal offence.

Although the Umno leader said he only circulated the video only to Umno committee members and deputy chiefs nationwide, Zahid said the explanation was unacceptable.

The video caught attention as it showed Muhyiddin breaking ranks with Najib, insisting that the debt-ridden 1MDB can no longer be given more time to resolve its problems.

'We'll assist MAS staff'

On a separate matter, Khairy confirmed that he received a letter by the National Union of Flight Attendants (Nufam) on the turmoil surrounding the fate of 6,000 Malaysia Airlines (MAS) staff members who will be terminated.

"I will meet with a representative from Nufam tomorrow evening to discuss this issue

"We are concerned with the fate of MAS employees, especially those who will be terminated.

"We will assist however we can to ensure that they will be justice for them, either through job opportunities or retraining," he said.

Some 20,000 MAS staff will either get termination or re-employment letters in the coming days, reports  The Star  yesterday as the national airline streamlines its entire workforce to start afresh as a smaller, regional airline.

Those re-employed will be offered jobs with new conditions though this number will only be 6,000 to 8,000 people.

Executive chairperson of the consulting and audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers Sdn Bhd Mohammad Faiz Azmi would be appointed as administrator and he will sign all the termination letters which will be sent out tomorrow.

The job terminations are aimed at easing the migration of MAS into a new company, MAS Bhd, which will begin operations on Sept 1.

Khairy also announced Umno Youth will organise an open day on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) due to the many grouses raised by the rakyat on the implementation of the tax system.

"We will invite the Customs Department, as well as the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry to listen to the grouses as well as questions by the rakyat," he said.

A number of associations, which includes the youth, traders as well as sundry shops will also be invited, he said.

The open day will be held before the fasting month and will most likely be held at PWTC, said Khairy.
