The police are investigating opposition lawmakers Tony Pua and Rafizi Ramli as well as The Edge Media Group owner Tong Kooi Ong under Section 124 of the Penal Code.

A senior police source confirmed the three are being probed for alleged activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

"Yes, they are being investigated," he told Malaysiakini .

He also did not discount the possibility of them being called in for questioning or detained to facilitate investigations.

He said the probe is related to allegations that the two were involved in the tampering and fabrication of documents related to 1MDB to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Contacted later, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar declined to comment on the matter.

Probing Lester and Justo

Earlier today, Khalid said the statements by former Sarawak journalist Lester Melanyi and Swiss national Xavier Andre Justo are being probed under Section 124.

Lester Melanyi claimed Rafizi and Pua were in cahoots with whistleblower website Sarawak Report in fabricating the documents.

According to him, the opposition falsified 90 percent of the documents related to this matter.

Both The Edge and Sarawak Report have published a slew of damaging articles on 1MDB, which has been a source of dilemma for Najib.

Justo is being detained in Thailand over his alleged attempt to blackmail his former employer with the stolen data.

It was claimed that he met with several Malaysians, including a member of the opposition in Singapore.

Thai police also revealed Justo claimed that he didn't tamper with the documents and sold the original "to a certain media outlet in Europe".

"He didn't make any changes to the documents and sent the original documents (to the buyer) as digital copies," said Thai police spokesperson Lt Gen Prawut Thavornsiri.

It was claimed that, based on information given by Justo, the emails were tampered with before it was published.

Both Rafizi and Pua have denied the allegations, while The Edge also claimed that it was not motivated by a political agenda but rather to pursue the truth.

Sarawak Report has also denied the claims.
