The movement Demi Malaysia is calling for public donations in case activists involved in the #TangkapNajib rally and other rallies to come are charged in court.

Demi Malaysia spokesperson Tarmizi Anuwar expressed concern that there will be more arrests in future protests, and some of them may face charges in court.

The money collected from the donations will be used to pay the bail money for those charged for involvement in the rallies, in order to secure their release.

“In case they are charged in court and need bail money, we here wish to launch a fund, which is the Tabung Bebaskan Tahanan (Free the detainees fund). We ask for the goodwill of the public to contribute to the detainees who have been arrested.

“This is important. The money is not only used for those arrested for the #TangkapNajib protest, but also for the protests slated on the Aug 8 and Aug 22, because the youths will not stop.

“The youths will continue our protests and voice our disagreement towards (Prime Minister) Najib Abdul Razak,” he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

Demi Malaysia is also the group that organised the #TangkapNajib rally, during which 29 people were arrested on Aug 1.

On the day before, three people accused of being involved in organising the rally where also arrested and are currently being held under remand.

Meanwhile, the Aug 8 date that Tarmizi mentioned refers to a rally in support of the suspended financial newspapers The Edge Financial Daily and The Edge Weekly .

He is tight-lipped about the Aug 22 protest, saying that he does not want to jump the gun and would wait for the organisers to announce it.
